When it comes to planning for a beach getaway, the usual places like Phuket, Krabi, Bali, Bintan or Langkawi are always common suggestions.

More often than not, the large crowds and the tourist traps at these destinations are a major turn off for travellers looking for a peaceful and serene getaway.

However, with Bawah Island, you might be able to get just that paradise you’ve been yearning for.

Situated just Northeast of Batam Island in the South China Sea, Bawah Island is bound to be the next hit destination for beachgoers when it opens in August next month.

The pristine and untouched island is only a three hour ride away from Singapore via ferry and a private seaplane ride, and this convenience makes it even more appealing to Singaporean travellers.

If there are any fears that media attention send hordes of tourists towards this hidden island paradise, you don’t have to worry because the island is regulated to only have 70 visitors at any one time.

To give you an idea of how attractive Bawah Island is as a travel destination, it has already been shortlisted for the Tourism Award 2017 by the Indonesian Tourism Ministry – even before it has officially opened its doors.

Beaches, Nature, and Adventure

Bawah aims to be a beach paradise that transports its visitors 10,000 years back into the future, and it’s not hard to see why.

To preserve its natural image of the island, no heavy machinery was allowed, and the island was literally built by hand.

For one, you can go out for a nice day on the beach on their 13 powder beaches. Sit back, enjoy the sun, and get a nice tan as you enjoy the smooth sand on your toes.

If you’re feeling a little more active, head out into the ocean and check out the 3 crystal clear lagoons that are within the islands. They have been carefully preserved so that you can enjoy the many reefs and sealife in its natural environment.

With 300 hectares worth of lush jungle canopy, travellers can explore the many hiking trails and enjoy the breath-taking scenery from a sea-side cliff.

Apparently, there are plenty of flora and fauna to accompany the island’s breathtaking scenic view points, so exploring the island’s mainland is a definite must.

Live The Life On The Sea

Due to the maximum capacity of 70 guests on the island, there are only 35 villas built on the island. That said, each villa is built for luxury, and you will definitely be more than comfortable in every single one of them.

Designed by Singaporean based architecture firm Eco-id, the villas are all constructed to be eco-friendly.

On the mainland, there are 21 beach villas and 3 garden villas.

However, if you would like to wake up surrounded by the calming sea, there are 11 seaside villas that are situated on the water.

After you’re all cosy and comfortable, your tastebuds will be in for a treat. The island’s main restaurant, called the Tree Top, will be headed by chef Omar Bernard, who hails from the famous Dolce Vita from Mandarin Oriental. There are also three bars – Grouper Bar, Jules Verne Bar, and Boat House Bar – for you to choose from if you are in the mood for a nice refresing drink.

Take A Seaplane

In the past, getting to Bawah Islands would require a complicated process of flying to to Tanjung Pinang, taking a ferry to Tarempa, before finally taking a speedboat to the island.

However, from May 25th onwards, you can now just take a ferry to Batam before reaching the island via a seaplane. Thanks to new regulatory arrangements, there is now a seaplane airport right in front of Bawah Islands!
