Our tourism industry made a dramatic comeback last year, notching a historic high for visitor arrivals as well as tourist receipts, and reversing its fortunes from 2015.

But since the target for this year is to grow visitors by between 0 and 2 per cent, and receipts by 1 to 4 per cent, it’s no wonder our tourism board has inked a first-of-its-kind deal to ensure that we are on the right path – with Disney no less.

It’s a three-year collaboration by our Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, aimed at boosting the appeal of our offerings as well as to attract more visitors. Sadly, Disneyland will not be coming to Singapore anytime soon but Disney fans will be excited because the tie-up is set to bring a slew of Disney-related events and activities – all themed around Disney’s biggest brands.

Star Wars Fans Rejoice!

Star Wars fanatics can get to meet Chewbacca and Kylo Ren next month as STB will be kicking off the collaboration with the Star Wars theme this year. Following which, 2018 will be the year of Marvel-themed events while Disney Animation/Disney Pixar-themed events is set to be the year after.

The board also feels that this partnership will not only beneficial for our tourism industry, but also serves a platform for local event organisers and small and medium enterprises to grow their businesses. For example, we could expect the small-time F&B entrepreneurs in Singapore featured in these upcoming events – a chance for them to enhance their capabilities and gain visibility.

While not much has been said on what can be expected, there will be a themed festival planned for next month and we’ve highlighted the offerings. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for them!

Held at Gardens By The Bay, one of the highlights of this festival will be the SaberTrees, with the Supertrees transformed into lightsabers! This festival also marks the 40th anniversary of the movie franchise.

Expect live-performances as well as a light show, the largest in Asia – complete with character appearances as well as photo opportunities.

Those who are up for a run at the end of the festival can end the night with an exciting Star Wars themed night run, but we won’t judge if you choose to kickback with a screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the race village instead.

On May 5 and 6, ditch your usual nightspot for a Star Wars themed Silent Disco party instead.

More Star Wars-related events are in the pipeline for the second half of the year, and the tourism board has promised to reveal more details closer to the date.
