A to-and-fro journey only sets you back by $40
Batam has been a long time favourite holiday destination of Singaporeans and it not hard to see why. The seafood is fresh, they have an A&W outlet (YAS!), the shopping is cheap and it is just a short ferry ride away! Perfect for a quick getaway. But, if you want to do something else while you are there, here’s a list of 7 things you can do which do not involve shopping or eating!
1. Get Involved In Water Sports
Batam is a hotspot for all kinds of water sports, including parasailing, windsurfing, kayaking and even snorkeling! There are plenty of resorts in the northern Nongsa coast that offer water sports as part of their package plans. Surfing is also extremely popular here and there won’t be a shortage of beaches that offer intense waves for this sport.
2. Catch The Sunset At The Barelang Bridge
Like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Barelang Bridge is just as iconic in Batam. The bridge is a chain of six different types of bridges connecting the islands of Batam, Rempang, and Galang. A perfect place for sunset viewing, you will not be disappointed with the beautiful seascape that provides a stunning background for the setting sun.
3. Get A Cheap And Good Massage
For a reasonable price of just 200 000 IDR (about S$21), you can get a traditional Balinese massage or a Thai massage, whichever you prefer. Batam Center is known for having a great selection of spas that cater to tourists. Relax and unwind after an intense day of water sports or a full day of shopping.
4. Relax At The Beach
If you have been to other areas in Indonesia, you would know that Indonesia has some beautiful beaches. Batam is no different! Nongsa Beach on the north coast is one of the beaches that is very popular. From here, you can also follow the walking trail that runs along the beach line around the bay to Turi Beach.
5. Cycle Along The Coast
If you are up for it, the northern coast of Batam has some of the most unique mountain biking opportunities that offer breathtaking scenery you can experience at your own pace. The trails alternate between seafront and jungle. Take on the 30 km bike ride from Turi beach through Teluk Mata Ikan and Batu Besar, ending at Tering Bay Course, if you are looking to work up a sweat.
6. Play Golf
If you are a golf aficionado, you would love the world class golf courses in Batam. On the northern side of the island, there is Tering Bay International Golf Course that was actually designed by legendary golfer Greg Norman! It would be a shame to pass up on this.
7. Explore nearby islands
If you want to explore the islands outside of Batam, there are plenty of other smaller islands just about a 20-minute ferry ride away. Take a ride to Bintan Island, perfect for a day trip, which has plenty of pristine beaches and untouched natural beauty.
