Foreigners will no longer be allowed to attend the annual Pink Dot event. This regulation comes in lieu of the recent changes to the Public Order Act that was implemented approximately one and a half months before the Pink Dot 2017 that will be held on 1 July 2017

Under the new Public Order Act, “foreign participation” is no longer allowed and the law no longer distinguishes between participants and observers. Anyone who attends the event is now considered to be a part of this assembly.

Official statement from Pink Dot

In light of this new law, Pink Dot released a FAQ and official statement expressing their ‘profound regret’ and to address the concerns of the public. Pink Dot also took to Facebook to remind its keen local supporters to bring their identification cards (ICs) in order to participate in the event. They also cautioned its foreign friends from flouting the law as it entails being found “guilty of an offense” and liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.

Responses from the public

Many expressed their frustration and sadness on Pink Dot’s facebook page, but others kept an optimistic outlook on the matter and continued to show their support for Pink Dot.
