Singapore Fashion Week 2017 has officially come to an end on Saturday night, but the fashion fever lives on.

It was game-on in terms of dressing up as we scouted around National Gallery Singapore, the official venue, to bring to you some of the cool outfits we spotted.

1. Ann Mendoza

Dressed in a colourful floral print crop top and matching print skirt, Ann strikes out in her black heels looking vibrant, chic and sassy.

Her chosen outfit is the Weeping Forest crop top and Laurel skirt by Malaysian designer Jonathan Liang, bought from SocietyA – a multi-label shop that carries emerging Asian designers’ collections.

She shared that her look is inspired by the reigning trend of Fall Winter 2017 – florals.  These pieces feature gorgeous embroidered blooms and illustrates a whimsical floral landscape, bringing to life both art and fashion, which seemed to be a perfect fit for Singapore Fashion Week.

Ann does not usually restrict to a single style but rather prefers to explore different styles depending on the occasion.

“After all, this is what makes fashion fun.”

However, she is particularly fond of strong statement pieces along with embroidery, lace and floral motif designs. Her love for such feminine pieces was also the cause of her excitement for the Whole9Yards show as the homegrown label is known for its unconventional attitude towards femininity.

2. Sharifah Nadiah

Modest fashion is starting to make waves in the industry. Spurred by her love for nature, Sharifah chose to don on a creation by Dubai-based Designer Annah Hariri which had gentle hues of huge floral prints adorning the white dress.

When it comes to styling and dressing up, Sharifah believes that being conservative and fashionable does not have to be mutually exclusive.

“As someone who is wearing a headscarf, it is important for me to cover up but that does not mean that you cannot look good at the same time. As long as you know how to style your headscarf, you can rock the look!”

Sharifah was also excited to watch the show by Indonesian designer Dian Pelangi as she admires the way that the designer skilfully utilises Batik, a traditional textile made by wax-resist dying technique, in all her designs. Dian Pelangi is renowned for reinventing Muslim fashion and being an avid supporter of Islamic styles and Muslim designer-wear.

3. Hanim Z.

Sparkling – literally, in gold and white. Hanim pulled off this classic combination looking effortlessly chic.

White is her favourite colour and also a staple in her wardrobe, which she likes to match with something sparkly such as gold or embroidery, and infused with a bit of tradition at times.  It’s clear from her outfit – a white jumpsuit from Miss Selfridge complemented with a Songket blazer by an Indonesian designer.

She loves how the designer took a contemporary approach to the Songket, which is a traditional type of brocade typically used in the making of kebayas, by turning it into a sharp looking blazer.

Her must-have item for Fashion Week? Her Chanel Liquid Matte Lipstick. She believes it is important to add colours to your lips for a finishing touch.

Having just attended the Modest fashion show, she was awed by designer Jovian Mandagie’s show. Hanim noticed the designer’s collection when it first retailed on Zalora, and was soon captivated by his works as they are traditional with a touch of modernity.

Meghna

Inspired by the SS17 tailoring trend as well as runway shows by Alexander Wang and Calvin Klein, Meghna decided upon a power suit to show that it can worn by ladies too. Her look for the day comprised of a matching checked grey jacket and shorts, a simple black tee and accessorised with an embellished beige clutch and camel coloured heels.

To her, a great pair of heels and a bag or clutch that complements her outfit are the two necessities for Fashion Week.

“With them you could get away with anything else. Of course, it is also important to enjoy and have fun during the shows.”

In terms of the Fashion scene in Singapore, Meghna feels that Singapore is rather up-to-date, possibly due the high competition amongst designers.

Kar Wai

Kar Wai stood out with his cool preppy vibe. Styled in a striking pairing of a black oversized jacket, white top and tailored copper pants, he topped his look with a checkered newsboy cap and a Fila pouch.  Androgynous, minimalistic and timeless is what he reveals as his style. He finds himself mostly in jeans, pants and an outerwear.

For this year’s Fashion Week, he was part of the crowd who were excited for the highly-anticipated Jason Wu show. Designer Jason Wu, known for dressing Mrs Michelle Obama, is acclaimed for his feminine style and floral-infused designs. He also showcased his latest SS18 collection.

When prompted to comment about the fashion scene in Singapore, Kar Wai divulged that he finds the overall sense of dressing conservative as people do not seem willing to go beyond their comfort zone when it comes to dressing up.
