It’s good news for the ‘gig’ economy with 4 out of 5 local firms planning to maintain or increase the number of contract hires. Traditional sectors such as transport and services, now have online apps that has transformed how services are delivered. Case in point: Uber and Grab.
With the trend gaining traction, the ‘gig’ economy, which essentially refers to an environment in which temporary positions and short-term engagements, have attracted even degree holders and skilled workers.
Why The Sudden Shift
In light of our uncertain economy, local firms now see the value of contract hires. With PMETs bearing the brunt of the retrenchments and crammed job vacancies, many workers are turning to contract jobs which is increasingly gaining traction with professionals in Singapore.
Forming a larger proportion of a company’s workforce, this market is more attractive than you think. For individuals, the contract model offers flexibility in terms of learning and development opportunities. One will also gain better control of their work-life balance and time to invest in valuable skills that are attractive to employers.
Calls For The Government To Take “Urgent Action”
As the ‘gig’ economy prevails, Ms Foo Mee Har (West Coast GRC) said “urgent action” is needed to rethink current labour laws to support freelancers. For example, she suggested putting in place Central Provident Fund (CPF) contribution obligations between parties who enter a contract for service.
Online forums also suggested a marketplace for ‘gig’ workers whereby they can have access to pooled medical coverage and efficient job-matching. Imagine a community where freelancers and employers can rate one another.
MOM’s Response
The ministry unveiled that greater protection for the welfare of freelancers is on the card with the setting up of a ‘Tripartite’ group. Freelancers can tap on this group for dispute resolution or even financial aid, which is financed by the ministry itself.
The workgroup is also set to study the concerns faced by those in the industry, including the lack of income security and savings for retirement.
Freelancers such as the ranks of Uber drivers and Airbnb proprietors are a mix of skilled talent who are arguably underemployed. With ‘gig’ platforms such as Uber and Grab gaining traction, it allows direct and easier access to working on a contract basis. It’s an unconventional job route but one which is getting more recognition.
